Top 40 Cash Cows

Disclaimer: We are currently in pre-season for the AFL. It’s impossible to gauge if rookies are going to be named or even if they are going to perform come Round 1 of the AFL Season. The two most important indicators when deciding to line up a cash cow in your team are NAB Cup pre-season form and if they are named in the Round 1 teams. As neither of these has even occurred it makes it very difficult to show this ranking report with any form of confidence. However, hopefully this list can give you some insight into some of the players who have performed well at lower level, training well with their clubs and likely on the fringe of getting the opportunity to play AFL football in 2012. With this list it will also help you watching any NAB Cup action, on players that you should be paying attention too.

When you read TAC Cup and NAB Under 18 AFL Championships results keep in mind that they only compete in 20 minutes quarter, which is far less than AFL time on the ground. We have a rule of thumb that you should add 1/3rd of their score on top of it to give a better gauge of how dominant they are in juniors.

When predicting Dream Team points it’s nice to look at junior level statistics to make a decision to roll the dice on young players but what matters most, is that they stay on the park. You need 6-7 games from them at a reasonble average for success.

Comments: McDonald will be 35 this year, retiring with the Melbourne Demons in 2010. He only plans on playing for 1 year with Greater Western Sydney before taking up a full time coaching role with them. Fantasy owners need 6-7 games from him early on and we think he will get them.

He played 251 games for Melbourne and captained the side from 2008 until retirement. He has been All Australian, and won the clubs best & fairest twice. He can seriously score fantasy points. In 2010 before retirement he averaged 95 Dream Team points & 100 SuperCoach points a game.

Not only can he fit in your midfield but we think you can play him on the field and he will return a solid 70-80 range score. This is a smart decision to rely on him. He was a terrific footballer and over his break he has continued his conditioning.

Comments: Shiel was pre-selected by Greater Western Sydney at the end of 2010. He is a strong midfielder who likely would have slotted in at Pick #3 in the national draft ahead of Dom Tyson if he wasn’t pre-selected. Do not be fooled by these pre-selected picks. They are very good football players who have gone under the radar. They have also already had full seasons together playing for the GWS team at lower level.

In 2010 Shiel played for the Dandenong Stingrays at TAC Cup level averaging 105 Dream Team points a game over 7 games. Last year playing for Greater Western Sydney in the NEAFL (Queensland league) he averaged 96 Dream Team points a game over 10 games. He is a very solid cheap option.

He will play early. He is as tough as nails and loves winning the hard ball. We believe Sheil should be high on your shopping list as a huge cash cow in 2012. His body is ready for AFL.

Comments: Mohr is a 23 year old who won the best and fairest award playing for the Casey Scorpions last year in the VFL. He played as a key defender, training twice a night on his team mate, Brendon Fevola, so he has had a lot of practice on key forwards. He showed an incredible array of skills to suggest he might be a very important player for GWS in 2012. We expect he will be named from Round 1 onwards and think he has the potential to give a very nice profit. At 195 cm he apparently will not have anybody at that height that could get close to him in speed.

He is built ready for AFL. A classic mature age recruit, he has a very nice long kick on him, fast and strong. We think Mohr is somebody you should monitor in NAB Cup action. The biggest issue is how chaotic the backline is. Will he be in shutdown mode and getting very little of the ball? Or will he be getting an absolute bucket load of it, chipping around the opposition press?

Comments: At 20 years of age, he may be ready to finally break into the side and cement his spot in the lineup after two years and two pre-seasons riddled with injury. He suffered from osteitis pubis in 2009 and then in 2010 had knee and AC joint injuries. He has been flying over this pre-season, coming in the top few percent in all running drills and is highly anticipated to have his breakout season.

The departure of Brad Ebert to Port Adelaide is opening a spot up for him. Stevens is a strong midfielder, who wins a lot of contested ball. He has a good mark on him and at 189 cm is quite a midfield weapon. We like him to be a very solid cash cow in 2012.

Comments: Pick #21, 2011 National Draft (F/S)

In the NAB Under 18 AFL Championships he averaged 28 possessions, 2 marks and 3 tackles leaving him with 82 Dream Team points a game playing in only 2 games over the 5 game carnival.

Mitchell is a top 10 pick which slipped to pick 21 due to the father son ruling with the Sydney Swans. He is on Elite Sports News hit list as a genuine cash cow. We think he has every chance to play straight away and is priced very nicely. He has an outstanding ball winning ability and his left foot is excellent and can penetrate.

Watch out for him in preseason NAB Cup matches. If he is named you should have him in your team. In his five matches for Claremont he averaged 131 Dream Team points and was a tackling machine. Sure there is a big step between Colt level and the AFL, but we think an average of between 70-80 is not unachievable and if he gets some stints on the ball, look out. He is perfect for the Sydney Swans. His style is their style.

Comments: Hampton is expected to be named in a Forward Pocket come Round 1 for Greater Western Sydney. He is fast, agile & has an excellent array of skills. He comes from Alice Springs and represented Northern Territory as a youngster in the Championships. He was Captain of Northern Territory in the 2010 NAB Under‐18 Championships, however, did not play suffering from osteitis pubis.

Hampton was one of the first pickups for the Giants. His body is ready for AFL, he has elite skills, and barring a disaster in the NAB Cup, we suspect he will be in the 22 players come Round 1.

Comments: Treloar was a 17 year old signed by GWS under the Club's list concessions. He has very good skills, is very creative and can play in many positions.

In the NAB Under‐16 Championships he averaged 21 disposals. The following year in 2010 he played for the Dandenong Stingrays in the TAC Cup where he averages 22 disposals.

We suspect he will start come Round 1 across the wing and as a Forward is a very solid option. We still would like to watch him in NAB Cup action.

Comments: Zorko is a 22 year old mature aged recruit. He has been playing in the Queensland league (NEAFL) and has won four consecutive best & fairest awards over the years. He is a small forward who works his butt off. Tackling, chasing, harassing. All the 1% jobs that coach’s love.

He is only very small in height but quite stocky and strong and is in line to get an opportunity with Brisbane this year. We think he might go Round 1, and he racks up plenty of fantasy points from goals & tackles. A big player to watch in NAB Cup action.

Comments: Watch out for Coniglio this year. He will play in Greater Western Sydney’s midfield & across the half forward line and we can’t wait to see him break onto the AFL scene. He is explosive, wins his own ball and his breakaway speed is exceptional. Compared by many to Adam Cooney with his added goal sense and superior skills.

Coniglio received the Larke Medal as the best player in the NAB Under 18 AFL Championships. He won All Australian honours and was the best player for WA.

Why is he AFL ready? His body is already built. He has been playing at league level in the WAFL giving him plenty of experience against grown men. He is a terrific leader and a future Captain of his team.

In the NAB Under 18 AFL Championships he averaged 22 possessions, 2 marks, 4 tackles, and 1.6 goals leaving him with 95 Dream Team points a game over the 5 game carnival.

He slips a little because he is expensive with his high draft pick.
