Top Cash Cows - Carlton Blues

Sunday, 19th February 2012

Our Pre-Season analysis continues looking at Cash Cows in more detail.

Next with the Carlton Blues

Any Carlton Blue Player priced around $200K or below is in this list and is Ranked based on Cash-Cow potential.

Over the coming few weeks of pre-season we are going to do an analysis on players with value from each club. Rather than just show the Top 40 list in the AFL, we are going to go deeper than that and discuss all the Cash Cow options from each team. We will discuss the players who are unlikely to get a game. The players who may get a game but are more likely to give you peanuts anyway. Our job is to give you the information. Then you can make your own informed decision.

Why do a full analysis on Cash Cows? Let’s face it, they dictate if you win or lose in fantasy land! Anybody can tell you which premiums you should take.

*Please Note the '2012 Mid Season Price Rise' is for Round 10 and is formulated behind the projected statistics. This is merely a gauge & is not exact. A lot more goes into the pricing changes than a simple formula

Comments: Sam Rowe has been mentioned as having a comparable impact to Nick Duigan since joining Carlton in the pre-season. He has excellent maturity and voice as a mature age recruit. He is working extremely hard over the pre-season for an opportunity.

Rowe was on the Sydney Swans rookie list for two years between 2005 and 2007, but wasn’t given an opportunity. He went to play for Norwood in the SANFL, having a very successful few years. At 198 cm and 24 years old, he has been brought in to see what he can do now.

He has hurt his ac joint falling at training recently. His arm is in a sling but no surgery is needed and is only expected to be off the track for a week.

Cash Cow Potential: High. Could come in immediately and have a role.

Comments: Injuries to players, tells many tales of 'What ifs'. Bower in 2009 had cemented a half back role in the Carlton seniors. He was young, agile, fast and had plenty of drive. Then injuries struck and he has battled to stay in the Best 22 ever since. He was even requesting a trade over the off season.

Last year Bower was the Sub for Carlton. He only came on late in the game and so decided to do some more work after the game at a nearby oval. Running laps of the oval he sustained a calf injury. That's the type of bad luck he has had.

Cash Cow Potential: High upside and good price if he is named. Tough 22 to stay in though.

Comments: Whisper are that Lucas is in line to take over Russell’s Half Back role. He was a high Draft pick several years ago and Carlton is very keen on him. 2012 may certainly be the year that he comes onto the scene. He will need to be at his best to hold a spot in a potential top 4 side.

Last year was a disappointing season for Lucas after his debut 2010 season with 8 games, he only managed 2 games last year with a medial ligament injury and performance issues plaguing him. There is no doubt Lucas is a talent and we think he has the skill set to hold down a half back line role this year. He has ambitions of a midfield role.

Cash Cow Potential: Pros: 70s average, could breakout, and will play. Cons: Expensive, you would never keep him for the season as he will not average over 100.

2012 Mid Season Price Rise:

$84,265.43

Height:

Weight:

Comments: Picked in the 2010 Draft, McInnes is a reasonable sized defender who matches up well on most types of forwards. He has strong credentials with a solid disposal and a strong mark. He will run off his man to create when given the opportunity.

He has had a strong pre-season and will be looking to be given an opportunity with Carlton at some stage.

Cash Cow Potential: He may need to impress at VFL level before getting a look in.

5   Patrick McCarthy   D   Carlton Blues   $104,200

2012 Mid Season Price Rise:

$84,265.43

Height:

196.00

Weight:

84.00

Comments: McCarthy is a key position defender who is also extremely athletic for his size. Drafted in 2010, he had his first season with the Northern Bullants at VFL level developing last year and has the potential to become a very important player for Carlton in years to come. It was tipped last year that he would get his opportunity this year.

Cash Cow Potential: An unknown when he will be given an opportunity with a busy defence already and spots tough to get. He is unlikely to score a huge amount in fantasy land.

2012 Mid Season Price Rise:

$104,927.37

Height:

187.00

Weight:

Comments: Collins had surgery on his shoulder mid season last year and was shut down for the remainder. He was traded across from Richmond in trade week in 2010 for Shaun Grigg. After 1 year, you would have to think Richmond has won out of this trade with Grigg averaging 22 possessions and playing 21 games across half back.

Cash Cow Potential: No word if he is even in the Best 22 at this stage. Monitor in NAB Cup.

2012 Mid Season Price Rise:

$32,689.12

Height:

187.00

Weight:

Comments: After being delisted by St Kilda at the end of last year, he was certainly surprised to get interest from Carlton and especially receive first hand compliments from the coach, Brett Ratten. It is believed he has a chance to get a role across many positions including half forward and half back. He has reportedly been training well in pre-season.

Cash Cow Potential: He is still Rookie Listed which is not ideal. NAB Cup form would need to be good.

8   Joshua Bootsma   D   Carlton Blues   $98,700

2012 Mid Season Price Rise:

$89,214.81

Height:

190.00

Weight:

74.00

Comments: Bootsma is a rebounding defender who we suspect Carlton hope will release Gibbs into the midfield in future years. He is a nice height and has great speed and endurance. He is most likely a little while from getting a game with this Elite top 4 side. He will need to impress at VFL, but has the skill set to really play at a high standard at AFL level.

He does need to spend some time in the gym. However, he makes good decisions and has nice breakaway speed. Coming from Western Australia he is a long term prospect for Carlton who they will put in the paddock for a while.

Cash Cow Potential: Not ready yet.

2012 Mid Season Price Rise:

$84,265.43

Height:

198.00

Weight:

99.00

Comments:
Casboult is a key position forward who has been playing for the Northern Bullants at lower level for several years and yet to debut with the club. He is a intriguing player at 198 cm and able to also pinch hit in the Ruck. He is strong in one on one contests and can take a solid mark.

His early career is scared by a 2009 incident which also included the suspension of some high profile Carlton players. It was quite simply an initiation process gone wrong in which Casboult had his arms strapped to a senior member of the clubs arms and had to match the senior member drink for drink. It led to a car accident and the AFL asking Carlton to explain.

Cash Cow Potential: If he were given an opportunity its unlikely he would score enough for fantasy.
