Top Cash Cows - GWS Giants

Friday, 2nd March 2012

Our Pre-Season analysis continues looking at Cash Cows in more detail.

Next with the Greater Western Sydney Giants

Any GWS Giant Player priced around $200K or below is in this list and is Ranked based on Cash-Cow potential.

Over the coming few weeks of pre-season we are going to do an analysis on players with value from each club. Rather than just show the Top 40 list in the AFL, we are going to go deeper than that and discuss all the Cash Cow options from each team. We will discuss the players who are unlikely to get a game. The players who may get a game but are more likely to give you peanuts anyway. Our job is to give you the information. Then you can make your own informed decision.

Why do a full analysis on Cash Cows? Let’s face it, they dictate if you win or lose in fantasy land! Anybody can tell you which premiums you should take.

*Please Note the '2012 Mid Season Price Rise' is for Round 10 and is formulated behind the projected statistics. This is merely a gauge & is not exact. A lot more goes into the pricing changes than a simple formula

*A warning about GWS players. The Round 1 Team will likely dramatically change across the season. As you read through the below article, you will notice that GWS has plenty of hidden talent, and they will be keen to give as many of them a shot across 2012 as they develop. For this matter, we worry that many players in this list could be named in early rounds but be rotated out as quick as 2-3 games. Look for stability as well as scoring explosiveness.

Comments: McDonald will be 35 this year, retiring with the Melbourne Demons in 2010. He only plans on playing for 1 year with Greater Western Sydney before taking up a full time coaching role. Fantasy owners need 6-7 games from him early on and we think he will get them.

He played 251 games for Melbourne and captained the side from 2008 until retirement. He has been All Australian, and won the clubs best & fairest twice. He can seriously score fantasy points. In 2010 before retirement he averaged 95 Dream Team points & 100 SuperCoach points a game.

McDonald is in great shape and ready to go. With a year off, he believes he is mentally and physically refreshed for the 2012 season. He has had a strong pre-season.

Cash Cow Potential: Not only can he fit in your midfield but we think you can play him on the field and he will return a solid 70-80 range score. He was a terrific footballer and over his break he has continued his conditioning.

Comments:
Giles is 24 years old, and has had an eventful career already being delisted by the Power in 2005. He sat on a SANFL club list for 4 years without selection until finally switching across to another SANFL club in 2010, in which he was named in the Team of the Year (Equivalent to All Australian). Last year he played for GWS in the QAFL after being drafted by them in the 2010 Rookie Draft.

Giles was rewarded for his efforts with a strong first game for GWS in the opening round of the NAB Cup. He finished with 89 Dream Team points over the 2 games in the NAB Cup and certainly deserves strong consideration after this performance. Quite agile for a big man.

It’s still not 100% that he will start in Round 1. It’s possible they may play Dean Brogan with O’hAilpin playing forward and used when needed. The odds of the Sydney Swans giving them a serious touch up are quite high. Mumford is a very good Ruck for the Swans. They may need Brogan to stem the flow, with his experience.

Cash Cow Potential: As the season approaches, his fantasy value is gathering traction.

Comments: Mohr is a 23 year old who won the best and fairest award playing for the Casey Scorpions last year in the VFL. He played as a key defender, training twice a night on his team mate, Brendon Fevola, so he has had a lot of practice on key forwards. He showed an incredible array of skills to suggest he might be a very important player for GWS in 2012. We expect he will be named from Round 1 onwards and think he has the potential to give a very nice profit. At 195 cm he apparently will not have anybody at that height that could get close to him in speed.

He is built ready for AFL. A classic mature age recruit, he has a very nice long kick on him, fast and strong. The biggest issue is how chaotic the backline is. Will he be in shutdown mode and getting very little of the ball? Or will he be getting an absolute bucket load of it, chipping around the opposition press?

Cash Cow Potential: Was not brilliant in opening round of NAB Cup, making plenty of bad decisions, but is still in line for a role this year.

Comments: Look out for this little kamikaze small forward to break onto the scene. He needs to hit the gym during pre-season, but has a craft for snaring goals and relentlessly tackles and chases. A genuine Round 1 starter for Greater Western Sydney. Monitor in NAB Cup games.

He has great endurance and speed, but his skills will need to be cleaner for the AFL level. He may make it as a midfielder later down the track, but at this stage with the midfield competition at GWS, it’s best he finds a niche for himself as a crumbing small forward while he earns his AFL wings.

At TAC Cup level last year, he played in 5 games averaging 27 possessions, 4 marks, 7 tackles and 2.2 goals amassing him 125 Dream Team points a game.

In the NAB Under 18 AFL Championships he averaged 19 possessions, 3 marks, 4 tackles and 1.75 goals leaving him with 85 Dream Team points a game playing in only 4 games over the 5 game carnival.

Cash Cow Potential: It's looking more and more likely that Smith is going to take that Round 1 spot in the forward lines. In a recent intra-club practice match, it was noted he was everywhere.

Comments: Hampton is expected to be named in a Forward Pocket come Round 1 for Greater Western Sydney. He is fast, agile & has an excellent array of skills. He comes from Alice Springs and represented Northern Territory as a youngster in the Championships. He was Captain of Northern Territory in the 2010 NAB Under‐18 Championships, however, did not play suffering from osteitis pubis.

Hampton was one of the first pickups for the Giants. His body is ready for AFL, he has elite skills, and looked very AFL ready in the opening NAB Cup round.

Cash Cow Potential: We are buying the tickets on Hamton early. He looks to be a gem across half forward for GWS this year.

Comments: Shiel was pre-selected by Greater Western Sydney at the end of 2010. He is a strong midfielder who likely would have slotted in at Pick #3 in the national draft ahead of Dom Tyson if he wasn’t pre-selected. Do not be fooled by these pre-selected picks. They are very good football players who have gone under the radar. They have also already had full seasons together playing for the GWS team at lower level.

In 2010 Shiel played for the Dandenong Stingrays at TAC Cup level averaging 105 Dream Team points a game over 7 games. Last year playing for Greater Western Sydney in the NEAFL (Queensland league) he averaged 96 Dream Team points a game over 10 games.

He will play early. He is as tough as nails and loves winning the hard ball. His body is ready for AFL.

Cash Cow Potential: Shiel was seen in a moonboot last week. This is far from ideal. If he starts playing at NAB Cup level again, he goes back onto the high profile Cash Cow list.

Comments: Clifton is a mature aged recruit. In 2010 before being drafted at pick #1 in the Rookie Draft by Greater Western Sydney, he played for the North Ballarat Roosters and was awarded the VFL best and fairest and North Ballarat’s best and fairest award. Just last year it was the same circumstance where Andrew Krakouer won the Best & Fairest in the WAFL. Also add that Nick Lower was similar in the SANFL coming Second in the Best & Fairest for the league. They both went on to be tremendous cash cows in 2011. We think it could be the same for Clifton.

The issue is that places in the best 22 are tough. He could certainly be playing Round 1, but you would think he needs to play some solid NAB Cup action. Sheedy has guaranteed the midfielder will get an opportunity in 2012.

Cash Cow Potential: Certainly on the radar, but need better form than Round 1, NAB Cup.

Comments: Buggs is a born leader. He Captained his Caulfield Grammar First XVIII team. Very vocal and loves the strategy in football. If Buggs is given an opportunity this year, it would be in defence.

In the opening round of the NAB Cup, he finished with 10 possessions, 1 tackle and a goal for 36 Dream Team points. He looked impressive. Buggs has gone under the radar so far, as he missed quite a bit of football last year with school commitments.

Cash Cow Potential: Impressive youngster, who Sheedy will want to test out. Monitor remainder of NAB Cup.

Comments: Concerns over his pace should not worry you. Tyson is born to play AFL. He has silky smooth skills, excellent vision, and endurance to go all day. He will be playing in Greater Western Sydney’s debut and will be prominent all season barring injury. He has been working extremely hard to show that his pace will not be an issue, running a solid 20m sprint in last year’s draft combine to put some fears to rest.

Showing similarities to Scott Pendlebury, he floats around the ground picking up possessions at will with his silky skills. We would be expecting an average around 65-75 in Dream Team and perhaps a little more in SuperCoach.

At TAC Cup level last year he played in 6 games averaging 25 possessions, 5 marks, 5 tackles, and 1 goal amassing him 103 Dream Team points a game.

In the NAB Under 18 AFL Championships he averaged 23 possessions, 5 marks, 4 tackles, and 1.2 goals leaving him with 92 Dream Team points a game over the 5 game carnival.

Cash Cow Potential: Expensive, but similar to Coniglio, being a very good player. Likely a better option in SuperCoach.

Comments: Coniglio will play in Greater Western Sydney’s midfield, and across the half forward line. We can’t wait to see him break onto the AFL scene. He is explosive, wins his own ball and his breakaway speed is exceptional. Compared by many to Adam Cooney with his added goal sense and superior skills.

Coniglio received the Larke Medal as the best player in the NAB Under 18 AFL Championships. He won All Australian honours and was the best player for WA.

Why is he AFL ready? His body is already built. He has been playing at league level in the WAFL giving him plenty of experience against grown men. He is a terrific leader and a future Captain of his team.

In the NAB Under 18 AFL Championships he averaged 22 possessions, 2 marks, 4 tackles, and 1.6 goals leaving him with 95 Dream Team points a game over the 5 game carnival.

Cash Cow Potential: Expensive, but plenty of upside and will play early and often.
