Top Cash Cows - GWS Giants
Friday, 2nd March 2012
Our Pre-Season analysis continues looking at Cash Cows in more detail.
Next with the Greater Western Sydney Giants
Any GWS Giant Player priced around $200K or below is in this list and is Ranked based on Cash-Cow potential.
Over the coming few weeks of pre-season we are going to do an analysis on players with value from each club. Rather than just show the Top 40 list in the AFL, we are going to go deeper than that and discuss all the Cash Cow options from each team. We will discuss the players who are unlikely to get a game. The players who may get a game but are more likely to give you peanuts anyway. Our job is to give you the information. Then you can make your own informed decision.
Why do a full analysis on Cash Cows? Let’s face it, they dictate if you win or lose in fantasy land! Anybody can tell you which premiums you should take.
*Please Note the '2012 Mid Season Price Rise' is for Round 10 and is formulated behind the projected statistics. This is merely a gauge & is not exact. A lot more goes into the pricing changes than a simple formula
*A warning about GWS players. The Round 1 Team will likely dramatically change across the season. As you read through the below article, you will notice that GWS has plenty of hidden talent, and they will be keen to give as many of them a shot across 2012 as they develop. For this matter, we worry that many players in this list could be named in early rounds but be rotated out as quick as 2-3 games. Look for stability as well as scoring explosiveness.

Comments: Reid played 4 games late in the season for the Western Bulldogs. Don’t let his horrendous fantasy scores from last year worry you overly. He was either subbed on or off during the game, so it’s not as bad as it looks. He has had an awful run of injuries over the years and the Western Bulldogs decided to let him go.
The Greater Western Sydney recruiting team obviously believe they can get more out of him, as long as they are able to keep him on the park. At 22 years old he has the size to compete at AFL level. Cash Cow Potential: We wonder if he is an AFL ready player, who is guaranteed a spot across half back and is an absolute bargain? Or is he 2012’s Nathan Krakouer? |

Comments: Hoskin-Elliott is expected to play for Greater Western Sydney in 2012 at some point. His best qualities are his huge right foot, a terrific line breaking ability and a big endurance tank. At the Draft Combine last year, he showed off this rare endurance with an incredible beep test and 3km time trial. He will be ready for the big stage.
We are expecting Hoskin-Elliott to obtain quite a bit of game time in 2012, however, his game winning ability will limit his fantasy scoring. We are expecting anywhere between 50-60 Dream Team points a game and quite similar in SuperCoach. His price tag as a #4 Draft Pick may not make him an appropriate cash cow. At TAC Cup level last year he played in 10 games averaging 17 possessions, 6 marks, 3 tackles, and 1 goal amassing him 80 Dream Team points a game. In the NAB Under 18 AFL Championships he averaged 14 possessions, 3 marks and 2 tackles, leaving him with 60 Dream Team points a game playing in only 3 games over the 5 game carnival. Cash Cow Potential: Doesn't look in Best 22 for Round 1 at the moment, but huge ability and upside. |

Comments: Tomlinson is a unique key position player that can play at either ends of the ground. Arguments have already begun as to where he is best suited, as is the case with Michael Hurley from Essendon. We would expect that Tomlinson will show up across a half back flank to begin with, but wouldn’t be surprised if they test him in other positions along the journey, with blowout losses surely coming GWS’s way. He is also eligible as a Forward.
He has terrific endurance and reads the play exceptionally well. We imagine he will play a similar role to that of Sam Fisher. He will certainly play given how shallow key position players were in the draft and Greater Western Sydney’s need to develop them faster than normal. At TAC Cup level last year he played in 7 games averaging 15 possessions, 5 marks and 2 tackles amassing him 62 Dream Team points a game. In the NAB Under 18 AFL Championships he averaged 10 possessions, 3 marks and 2 tackles, leaving him with 43 Dream Team points a game playing in only 4 games over the 5 game carnival. Cash Cow Potential: He will likely play Round 1, however, his scoring capabilities as a key position player may not have him scoring enough. |

Comments: Ugle is likely to play forward when he gets his opportunity with Greater Western Sydney. But he can play through the midfield and even down back, showing his flexibility. He has been strong statistically at junior level, but it seems he may not be quite ready for AFL level yet.
Cash Cow Potential: Looked reasonable in opening round of NAB Cup, but seems unlikely to play Round 1. |

Comments: We liken Cameron to Tom Lynch last year in his first season. Cameron is a key forward who’s chances of playing Round 1 have taken a big improvement with the news of Patton being out until May. Cameron was another of Greater Western Sydney’s pre selections, and has gone under the radar. Truth be said, Cameron could have easily been featuring in the Top 10 Draft picks also if it wasn’t for the pre-selection.
At 6’4” and 90kgs, we are all aware that key forwards take longer to develop. He can take a strong contested mark and is quite agile for his size. He kicked 19 goals in 12 games playing for GWS in the QAFL. But we doubt he can go above the 50-60 point range in either fantasy format. The ball just won’t be down that end enough and he will have defenders like he has never seen before. Cash Cow Potential: An ok option. Will play, is lively, but is a key position forward. |

Comments: Nathan Bock averaged 80DT/94SC a game last year for Gold Coast. Davis will be playing an almost identical role, however, he is less experienced and has a younger team.
Davis is a key position defender, who reads the play well, will collect plenty of marks, but ultimately has a job to do. We think he may just be that little bit too expensive to be considered. Cash Cow Potential: Expensive, In Best 22, shutdown defender. We suggest no. |

Comments:
Darley played in the opening round of the NAB Cup finishing with 10 possessions and 3 marks for 36 Dream Team points. He only played in the 1 match, against the Western Bulldogs and looked lively. Named surprisingly as a defender, Darley is in fact a strong inside midfielder, who has had no trouble winning a heap of the ball as a junior. In 2010 he won the MVP award for Tasmania in the NAB AFL Under‐16 Championships averaging a massive 28 touches a game. He continued on in 2010 averaging 25 touches a game, named the best player in Division 2 in the Championships. Cash Cow Potential: Only 22 spots and so many players with so much promise. Darley may miss out early, but has shown plenty in juniors, to suggest he could be a profit maker. |

Comments: In the first round of the NAB Cup, he finished with 10 possessions, 2 marks and 3 tackles for 44 Dream Team points over the 2 mini matches, looking lively in the first match.
Townsend is a medium sized utility, aiming to play 7-8 games of football in 2012, and was in the Best 22, in a pre-season intra club practice match. He came Runner Up in 2010 playing for the Giants at TAC Cup level, and has an incredibly high efficiency rating, which may put him higher in SuperCoach ratings. Cash Cow Potential: Fringe Best 22, but can he hold his position long enough, and play early enough to be profitable and successful? |

Comments: Haynes can play across a wing, but also slip forward at times as well. At 192cm he is a terrific height to be difficult to matchup on. He can beat you on the ground and he can beat you in the air. He has been mirrored to Nathan Fyfe. He won the Best & Fairest award for his TAC Cup team, the Dandenong Stingrays last year.
Some of Haynes’ assets are his endurance, overhead mark, and winning his own ball. He will play some games this year for Greater Western Sydney, but it’s difficult to predict when. Sheedy has noted that he will be cautious with his youngsters and not rush them all into the spotlight immediately. Haynes still needs to put more weight on for his height, and will be hitting the gym as we speak. At TAC Cup level last year, he played in 11 games averaging 18 possessions, 6 marks, 4 tackles, and 1.91 goals amassing him 91 Dream Team points a game. In the NAB Under 18 AFL Championships he averaged 14 possessions, 3 marks and 2 tackles, leaving him with 60 Dream Team points a game playing in only 3 games over the 5 game carnival. Cash Cow Potential: They can't play all the high Draft Picks immediately, and Haynes may be a player who gets his opportunity later in the season. Still an enormous talent. |

Comments: Hombsch was one of the first to be selected on the GWS list. There was speculation he would have been a potential top 20 pick in the National Draft if he wasn’t taken as a 17 year old. This is always hard to gauge but the fact is, he played all season for GWS at lower level as a key position defender. This will not be the case at AFL level as he is just not big enough. His rebound out of defence will likely give him an opportunity for the Giants at some stage in 2012.
Cash Cow Potential: NAB Cup in Round 1, hardly fired a shot with 8 Dream Team points. Not currently in Best 22 |
