Top 40 Cash Cows (FINAL EDITION)
Tuesday, 20th March 2012
We have attempted to put this Ranking Report in Cash Cow Potential order for Round 1 of the season. So although we believe for example Tom Mitchell and Dayne Zorko are far more explosive than some of the players ranked in this list, because they are injured and not likely to play in Round 1, we have overlooked them.
Also note, that a player in this list may have a higher '2012 Mid Season Price Rise', however, we have also taken into consideration, chance of playing Round 1, Substitute Vest potential, Job Security & Injury proneness. So they are not always in order of Profit potential.
Disclaimer: We are still in pre-season for the AFL. We are unaware if these players will in fact be named in Round 1. The two most important indicators when deciding to line up a cash cow in your team are NAB Cup pre-season form and if they are named in the Round 1 teams. Without knowing who is named in Round 1, it makes it very difficult to show this ranking report with any form of confidence. Being named in Round 1 is just so important. However, hopefully this list can give you some insight into some of the players who have performed well over pre-season and likely on the fringe of getting the opportunity to play AFL football in 2012.
When you read TAC Cup and NAB Under 18 AFL Championships results keep in mind that they only compete in 20 minutes quarter, which is far less than AFL time on the ground. We have a rule of thumb that you should add 1/3rd of their score on top of it to give a better gauge of how dominant they are in juniors.
*Please Note the '2012 Mid Season Price Rise' is for Round 10 and is formulated behind the projected statistics. This is merely a gauge & is not exact. A lot more goes into the pricing changes than a simple formula
*We encourage further discussion on the players. Please click on the View Comments and share your thoughts.
*A warning about GWS players. The Round 1 Team, will likely dramatically change across the season. GWS has plenty of hidden talent, and they will be keen to give as many of them a shot across 2012 as they develop. For this matter, we worry that many players could be named in early rounds but be rotated out as quick as 2-3 games. Look for stability as well as scoring explosiveness.

Comments: Stephenson is a 29 year old, taken by the Geelong Cats with pick #78 in the National Draft. Why is he being drafted? Geelong has lost Brad Ottens and need an experienced head to fall on in the Ruck department. Stephenson is that guy. He has been playing for the North Ballarat Roosters in the VFL and has absolutely dominated against at times AFL Ruck options. He is super strong and his endurance for a big man is solid. Expectations need to be pulled back on Stephenson being named in Round 1. Chris Scott has suggested recently that Stephenson has got quite a bit more work to do before he is given the opportunity against Aaron Sandilands. Scott also mentioned that Stephenson only took small steps forward in his NAB Cup debut.
Stephenson will get plenty of hit outs and perhaps 10 possessions a game. We still like him as a solid Ruck bench option. He actually averaged 95 Dream Team points a game last year over 19 games but this is a big step up in class, and he won’t be breaking records like he did, at VFL level. Cash Cow Proposition: Stephenson is a chance to line up with Trent West playing forward. His pre-season form suggested he actually took steps backwards, but is still on the radar. |

Comments: Guthrie is fit and firing in pre-season. He has put on 7kgs since arriving at the club and thinks he is ready to make an impact at AFL level. He is expected to play a few different roles, including a run with role in the midfield and across half forward. He is already a cult hero at Geelong, wearing Number 29. (Gary Ablett's old number). Many fans own his Guernsey number.
Cash Cow Proposition: Expensive but looking as if he will play and can score points. Has been earmarked for a Round 1 game. |

Comments: Morris has been drafted as a mature aged recruit after playing a big season at SANFL last year with West Adelaide. It’s suspected he is in the running for a back pocket role with the Tigers. This is his last chance to make it on the biggest stage and he will throw himself at the opportunity with open arms. He is tough as nails and we liken his position to that of Nicholas Duigan from Carlton last year. Morris won’t get a ton of it playing in a back pocket, but we suspect he might be good enough for a 50s average on a bench and some reasonable return of money.
Cash Cow Potential: Pushing for a Round 1 spot, and finished off with a bang in the final round with 90DT points. |

Comments: We liken Cameron to Tom Lynch last year in his first season. Cameron is a key forward who’s chances of playing Round 1 have taken a big improvement with the news of Patton being out until May. Cameron was another of Greater Western Sydney’s pre-selections, and has gone under the radar. Truth be told, Cameron could have easily been featuring in the Top 10 Draft picks, if it wasn’t for the pre-selection. At 6’4” and 90kgs, we are all aware that key forwards take longer to develop. He can take a strong contested mark and is quite agile for his size. He kicked 19 goals in 12 games playing for GWS in the QAFL. But we doubt he can go above the 50-60 point range in either fantasy format. The ball just won’t be down that end enough and he will have defenders like he has never seen before.
Cash Cow Potential: An ok option. Will play, is lively, but is a key position forward. |

Comments: Kerridge is a readymade AFL player at 188cm and 84kgs. He underperformed for Vic Country in the Championships and was dropped out of the side after two games last year. He went back to TAC Cup level knowing he needed to show more to get a good chance on an AFL list. He is very determined, strong and played exceptionally well for his struggling TAC Cup side. He prides himself on his clearance work and likes to sneak forward and kick a goal.
At TAC Cup level last year he played in 16 games averaging 24 possessions, 6 marks, 4 tackles and 1.19 goals amassing him 102 Dream Team points a game. Cash Cow Potential: He is certainly around the mark of a Round 1 game, but he will likely start Round 1 as the sub, if he is named. The Crows do not have injuries, Kerridge would need to fight his way into the best 21 to hold a 50s average. It is an uphill battle, but certainly achievable. |

Comments: The 19 year old didn’t play last year, recovering from surgery on his hip. His agility is top of the class, winning the testing at the Draft Combine. We worry that Geelong is a tough team to break into, especially early. But last year it was done, so it’s possible. Smedts is having a terrific pre-season, however, recently Chris Scott has openly discussed the idea that Smedts is a little overhyped. He looks polished and skilful when he goes near the ball, but it has to be taken into consideration, that he hasn't played a lot of football over the past 2 years.
Cash Cow Potential: Smedts has upside. He is a good football player, but Green Vest and job security are likely issues. |

Comments: Saad is a lightening quick 22 year old mature aged recruit for St Kilda. He was the fastest in the 20m sprint at the draft combine, and has been playing at VFL level for the past few years. He was never drafted early on, as he has only been playing AFL just 5 years after transitioning from Soccer. Saad is a small forward and it’s a position St Kilda are searching for. He was sensational in the first match against Sydney with 4 possessions, 3 tackles and a goal for 32 Dream Team points. Let us not forget these were only 20 minute quarters. Regular AFL quarters run for 30 minutes. His pre-season was promising and we estimate he looms around the 50 mark.
Cash Cow Potential: Saad should be on your radar. He is likely to be named Round 1 and looks to be quite explosive in the forward lines. |

Comments: Kennedy was looked over in the 2010 National & Rookie Draft, which doesn’t give you good feelings about his potential. He won a lot of the ball at TAC Cup level, but he has a shaky kick on him. In the final round of the NAB Cup, Kennedy took it right up to Richmond, with a strong performance in the final round of the NAB Cup, finishing with 22 possessions, 10 marks and 2 tackles for 97 Dream Team points. He was an explosive scorer at TAC Cup level, but most suggested he still needed further time to develop before being considered. His most recent performance has pushed the thought that he is ready to be tested now.
Cash Cow Potential: Job Security is the issue. If he can hold a spot, he seems to be able to score points. |

Comments: Gibson is a 25 year old mature aged recruit who has set a blistering pace in pre-season. He collected 30 possessions in North Melbourne's intra-club practice match earlier this year. Gibson captained Box Hill last year and averaged 28 possessions a game in the VFL. He knows how to find the ball! In the NAB Cup opener, he was excellent, collecting a team high 9 possessions in the first half match against Richmond.
Cash Cow Potential: Very intriguing early in pre-season, but played as the Sub later in NAB Cup action, hardly firing a shot. Seems destined for Rookie elevation, but risky for a spot Round 1. |

Comments: Pfeiffer is a mature aged recruit from Norwood, who is ready to step in immediately and play if asked. He plays across half back and also through the midfield. Pfeiffer will throw the kitchen sink at his last chance. Aged 24, he has been dropped from Carlton and Adelaide's list over his career. He made a return this year with an impressive performance at SANFL level last year. It has been clear in pre-season that he won't leave any stone unturned in his attempts to get an opportunity, throwing his body into every contest. He was recently elevated off the Rookie list.
Cash Cow Potential: On the senior list and ready for games now. He is not going to set the world on fire in fantasy, but he is shaping as a solid option. |
